THE W.E.B. DUBOIS CLUB
Broadcast: March 19, 1966
The W.E.B. DuBois Clubs of America, which has a chapter at Indiana University, were named after the late Professor W.E. Burghart DuBois, an educator. Professor DuBois was a Marxist most of his life and admitted to being a Communist late in life when he officially joined the Communist Party. What type of man was he? Before his deathin 1963 he wrote the following in a poem praising Communist China.
Down then religion and church . . . away myth and miracle, creed and dogma . . . God lives again, but not your God, Europe and America, not that, not that! No Christ to kill, no faith to fan, what China worships is a Man, a Workingman.
Commenting on the trial of the convicted Communists, the Rosenbergs, Dubois said of the American people:
We are the murderers hurling mud, we are the witchhunters drinking blood.
What are the goals of the W.E.B. DuBois Clubs? Let me read from the October, 1964 F.B.I. Law Enforcement Bulletin. This article is addressed to all law enforcement officials. The headlines of the article are:
WANTED: YOUNG PEOPLE TO HELP BURY AMERICA. OPENINGS FOR PALLBEARERS OF TRUTH AND GRAVE DIGGERS OF DEMOCRACY. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.
If Communism advertised its true aims in this manner, it would become a dusty, cobweb-covered doctrine untouched by young Americans. But the treachery of Communism does not allow such a factual recruiting poster. A record number of young people are now entering college classrooms to engage in one of man's most noble pursuits, the search for truth through the acquisition of knowledge. In America, this endeavor is as honored as the freedoms which make it possible. It is an undeniable fact that under Communism the search for truth does not exist. Communism stipulates the "truths" its scholars must embrace and spreads its venomous lies and distortions through any available medium.
A Reminder: "An army of principles will penetrate where an army of soldiers cannot." - Thomas Paine
This academic year will undoubtedly see intensive Communist Party efforts to erect its newest facade on the nation's college campuses to draw the blood for the vampire which is international Communism. In its continuing drive to attract young Americans, the Communist Party spawned the W.E.B. DuBois Clubs of America. AS an example of Commusit deception in action, the Dubois Clubs chose as their official insignia a half white, half black circle encompassing a white hand and a black hand under a dove. Thus the symbols of unity, brotherhood, and peace wave as a banner for an ideology that employs discord, hate and violence.
If our young citizens turn an objective, analytical searchlight on this ideology and its organizational arms, they will understand Communism for what it is- a materialistic, Godless dogma dedicated to world domination. Let me read from the AP Wire Service.
The Justice Department has petitioned the Subversive Activities Control Board to require the W.E.B. DuBois Clubs of America to register as a Communist Front organization. The Department says the group is a Marxist Youth organization. Attorney General Katzenbach says the Clubs were created by the U.S. Communist Party.
The goals of the organization are the same as the goals set forth by the Communist Party in the United States. Here is an article from the November 28, 1965 Sunday issue of THE WORKER, the official Communist newspaper in the United States. In this issue Bettina Aptheker, a founder of the Dubois Cubs, affirms her right to be a Communist. Miss Aptheker is the daughter of Herbert Aptheker, the No. 1 theoritician of the Communist Party in the United States. In response to this article by Miss Aptheker, the National Office of Dubois Clubs gave this reply:
We applaud Miss Aptheker's action in making known her Communist affiliation. For many years an atmosphere of intimidation and public pillory has forced the American Communist Party unwillingly underground. The time has come when Communists must reassert their right to participate publicly in the American political arena. . . The political orientation of the organization (the DuBois Clubs) is Socialist. The majority of our members consider our overriding purpose to be the study of and the working towards a Socialist America.
Let us move to another article from THE WORKER of February 27, 1966. Here Mr. Gus Hall, the head of the Communist Party in the United States, gives the new program for the Communist Party USA.
The Communist Party USA strives to be such an organization. It is a revolutionary working-class party dedicated to the struggle against evils of capitalism as they affect the lives of our people today and to the struggle for a Socialist America.
So you can see that it is quite clear. No matter how the DuBois Clubs deny any Communist affiliation, their stated goals are the same as the Communist Party in the United States- the overthrow of the present United States government and the installation of a Socialist United States of America.
I know of no way of judging the future other than by looking at the past. Let us look at what happened at the University of California at Berkeley in 1964. Communists in or connected with the Dubois Club have been identified as prime movers of the student riots. During the period of the riots at the University of California at Berkeley Mickey Lima, Chairman of the Communist Party of Northern California was seen almost daily on the campus. So was Robert Truehalf, identified Communist member of the National Lawyers Guild. In fact, the President of the University, Mr. Clark Kerr, is quoted as saying: "Up to 40% of the hard core leaders. . . of the student riots were adherents of the Mao-Red Chinese Communist line."
